Road closures around Bingham for highways work

The Highways Agency is advising road users of a series of overnight road closures as work continues on three toucan crossings near the A46 by Bingham.

The crossings will allow pedestrians, cyclists and horse-riders to safely cross Nottingham Road at Stragglethorpe, the A52 link road between Saxondale Roundabout and the new Bingham Roundabout and the A6097 at the Margidunum junction.

The closures, which are necessary to install cabling and traffic detection loops, all take place from 8pm to 6am the following morning.

The A46 carriageway will not be closed to traffic during these works.

On Tuesday of next week, the A46 northbound entry and exit slip roads will be closed at the Stragglethorpe junction and two-way temporary traffic lights will be in place on Nottingham Road.

Northbound traffic wanting to leave the A46 at Stragglethorpe will be diverted to the Saxondale junction where it will be able to turn round and return on the southbound carriageway.

Northbound traffic intending to join the A46 at Stragglethorpe will instead be diverted southbound to the Owthorpe junction where it can turn round to join the northbound carriageway.

On Wednesday of next week, the A52 Saxondale link road will be closed in both directions.

Eastbound A52 traffic will be diverted via the northbound A46 to the Margidunum junction where it will use the old A46 to rejoin the A52 at the Saxondale Roundabout.

Westbound traffic will be diverted from Saxondale roundabout northbound along the old A46 to join the A46 southbound at Margidunum. From there it can then either stay on the A46 or, for A52 traffic, leave at Bingham roundabout.

On Thursday of next week, the northbound entry and exit slip roads will be closed at Margidunum junction and two-way temporary traffic lights in place on the A6097.

Traffic wanting to join the A46 northbound will be diverted southbound to Saxondale junction where it can turn round and return on the northbound carriageway. Northbound traffic intending to leave the A46 at Margidunum will carry on to the Red Lodge Junction where it will turn round and return on the southbound carriageway.

The toucan crossings are expected to be complete in the next few weeks.

Highways Agency project manager Steve Wrenn said: “The work involves saw-cutting the carriageway and inserting cables.

"In all three cases this can only be done safely with a full closure of the relevant section of carriageway or slip road.

“In order to minimise disruption the closures will be in place when traffic flows are lightest, and diversion routes are deliberately short but road users should allow an extra ten minutes for their journeys.

"We would also advise drivers of high-sided vehicles to follow the appointed diversion for the A52 link road closure as this will avoid the low railway bridge at Bingham.”

Up-to-date traffic information for the whole of the Highways Agency's road network is available online at www.highways.gov.uk/traffic or on 0300 123 5000.
