Severn Trent roadworks bring two months of one-way system at the junction of Baldertongate, London Road and Sherwood Avenue

A one-way system will be introduced next week on London Road, Newark as part of a £60m water and waste improvement scheme.

Severn Trent is laying new sewer pipes along London Road and into Bowbridge Road.

To complete the work safely, a one-way system will be introduced from Monday.

Severn Trent, with partners BNM Alliance, is working in the town to protect homes from flooding and provide a reliable water supply.

Severn Trent’s project manager Mr Tim Sawyer said: “We have accomplished so much with our work in Newark, and as we come into our final year, we are even closer to everyone being able to benefit from all the hard work that has gone into making the project a success.

“This next stage will see us progress our new sewer pipes along London Road, which will then be connected to the huge tunnel we created last year, meaning the network can hold much more rainfall and waste water, helping prevent flooding in the town.”

BNM Alliance will be continuing to carry out work on behalf of the company, which will see a temporary one-way system in place on London Road between the junctions of Baldertongate and Sherwood Avenue.

The work will take place in three phases.

All three phases will see a temporary roundabout installed at the Baldertongate and Sherwood Avenue junction.

Traffic going into Newark will continue on London Road, while traffic going out of Newark will be diverted on to Sherwood Avenue and Baldertongate.

Bowbridge Road will also be closed for the laying of new sewers.

Initially this closure will be at the London Road junction but will move steadily down Bowbridge Road, towards Sydney Terrace.

Earp Avenue will also be closed for the duration of Bowbridge Road works to prevent vehicles using the adjoining estate to bypass the traffic restrictions.

The works will stop in the vicinity of Sydney Terrace, not extending as far as the entrance of Newark Hospital on Bowbridge Road.

For those who usually access the hospital via London Road, a traffic diversion will be in place, guiding patients and visitors to Portland Street, Victoria Street and Boundary Road.

Via East Midlands will also carry out improvement works to traffic signals at the same time.

Both companies will work under the same traffic management.

Work is expected to finish April 26.

Mr Sawyer said: “We have worked closely with Nottinghamshire County Council and Via East Midlands to plan this work to be done at the same time, so we can hopefully reduce any disruption by working alongside each other.

“We are really sorry if this does cause an inconvenience, but it’s vital that our teams and other road users are kept safe during our work.”

The multi-million pound project, which started in 2016, is due to be complete by 2020 will see more than 400 homes and businesses protected from sewer flooding.
