More than 200 children took part in arts and crafts activities at Southwell Minster during half-term.

The minster invited children to take part in Roman themed arts and crafts.

Children joined the minster’s education team in crafts, food tasting, archaeological finds handling and refreshments.

Southwell Community Archaeology Group (SCAG) were at the event providing pottery identification.

They partner with the minster to provide day trips for schools in Southwell to learn about Roman archaeology.

The minster is built on the site of one of the largest Roman country villas in the country and SCAG have been carrying out work around the site.

Children also had the option to learn about the types of fruit Romans would find on trees and bushes, through Cookschool.

The most popular activity was making mosaic coasters with ceramic tiles.

A spokesperson for the education team at the minster said: “It was a great turnout.

“We had more than 200 children and if you include parents and under threes then around 400 people turned up.

“We had a lot going on. We have done several of these family themed days so it was important to do something different.

“SCAG and Cookschool were new additions.

“We were delighted that the weather held up as children were able to go on 20 minute walks round the site.

“Children were also able to dress up in Roman costumes and hold replica artefacts such as wax tablets and oil lamps.”

The next family event at Southwell Minster will take place on July 30 and will have a medieval theme.
