The stars of a US reality TV show swung by Newark Showground this weekend to visit Europe's largest truck festival.

Ron and Amy Shirley are the stars of Lizard Lick Towing, which follows the fortunes of a repossession company based in Lizard Lick, North Carolina, USA.

They hopped across the pond to spend the weekend at Truck Fest meeting fans, signing autographs and helping to raise money for charity.

Ron, known as 'Ronnie' in the show, drove a tow-truck through a slalom and reversed it into a bay in 39 seconds as part of a driving display in the main arena.

He and Amy then auctioned off a series of signed photographs for £250 which will be donated to local hospitals.

When asked what he was enjoying about his stay, Ron said: "We tell everybody God put us here and fans keep us here.

"If it wasn't for these fans here in Europe and the UK, we wouldn't be on TV, so we just wanted to come out and show them how much we appreciate them.

"I'm having as much fun as a short-legged fat pony in a high field of oats."

Wife Amy said: "We just come out here to give everyone some Lizard Lick embracement.

"We just come across the pond to make sure everybody knows that we are who we are, and we like to love people, hug them and show them how we are when we're in the States, and say hello.

"If we were at home right now we'd be enjoying five days of rain - so yeah, sunshine, cool weather, it's always a good thing."

Amy said she didn't get to see as much of the area as she would like to but was enjoying her stay in the UK.

Truck Fest featured around 700 trucks including American trucks, wreckers, monster trucks and custom-built trucks.

It was first held in 1983 and organisers Live Promotions Events now holds six other Truck Fests across the UK.

Truck Fest organiser Mr Bob Limming said: "It's growing every year and we like being at Newark Showground.

"We have been blessed with the weather and the truckers enjoy it here because it's such as nice facility.

"We have a lot of rare, vintage trucks and American-style trucks.

"People come here from all over Europe and we will have about 30,000 people here this weekend."

The festival raised more then £700 for the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance on Saturday.

Truck Fest will be held again at Newark Showground on July 16 and 17.
