Newark Rotary Club celebrates 100 years
More than 70 people have attended the 100th anniversary celebration of a service organisation aiming to improve the lives of the community.
The evening dedicated to Newark Rotary Club included Rotarians from the Mother Club, Nottingham and both Daughter Clubs, Southwell and Newark Castle.
President Ivor Walker welcomed everyone to the dinner which was followed by toasts to Rotary International, and to the 75 guests.
The principal guest was Graham Cartledge CBE DL who is chairman of Hadley House, the parent company of design teams Pragma and Benoy, two international Newark based companies.
Over the century, the Newark club has held a wide range of fundraising events for local good causes, as well as donating part of club membership to wider projects.
The Rotary group has given around £100,000 to charities and good causes.
In recent years, Guide Dogs for the Blind, CASY, Newark Children’s Bereavement Centre, and Newark Community First Aid have all been supported.
In addition, the Rotary Club of Newark has sponsored the establishment of Nordic Walking sessions, meeting at Sconce and Devon Park, to help the mobility of people with Parkinson’s Disease.
It also supports sponsors Newark’s Young Musicians Competition each March for junior school pupils, and, with Newark Castle Club, The Courage Awards celebration for secondary students who face adversity.
