Newark Rotary president Glen Foreman donates more than £1,000 to Newark Orchard School

A cheque for more than £1,000 has been presented to a Newark special school.

Newark Rotary president Glen Foreman visited Newark Orchard School’s Appletongate site to present the staff and Friends of the School with a cheque for £1,700 after fundraising for them for the past year.

The Rotary’s president chooses a charity to raise money for each year and as the school’s Friends is a registered charity, Glen chose to hold fundraising events for the Newark Orchard School.

Glen said: “We have had a good relationship with Newark Orchard through our Awards for Courage.

“The children cope so well with the challenges they face every day, and are such happy children, and the school has a lovely atmosphere.”

In the past year, Newark Rotary has held a games night, an afternoon tea, a concert and other events to raise money for the school, and they raised £1,700 overall.

The Rotary also presented the school with a giant teddy bear called Oscar, which had been used in a previous fundraiser to guess the bear’s date of birth, which turned out to be June 11, to bring the children more joy.

Lisa Whaley, chairman of the Friends of the School, said: “This cheque is for more than we could raise in a year so we are so grateful.

“We are trying to get a pot of money going for the the new building so this will make an excellent start.”

The money will also be used to help pay for some new soft play equipment, new books for the library and other improvements to the school.
