Newark: RSPCA Radcliffe speak out following sentencing of Bella the dog's owner at Nottingham Magistrates' Court
The RSPCA, who have been caring for Bella the dog since her rescue, has spoken out following the conclusion of the attempted drowning case in court today.
Charlene Latham was the only one to face justice over the attempted drowning of German Sheppard Bella in the River Trent at Farndon.
The case against Leigh Johnson was discontinued, despite Latham naming him in her statement as carrying out the act.
The RSPCA determined that there was insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction against Johnson, so magistrates this morning agreed to the withdrawal of the charge against him.
On Facebook, RSPCA Radcliffe Animal Centre said: "We know this case has been extremely tough for those investigating, difficult and frustrating at times. We thank our national colleagues for their efforts in bringing about some justice for Bella and of course the most enormous thanks will always be to her amazing rescuers Jane and Joanne. Without them Bella would not be with us today.
"We are both proud and privileged to have cared for Bella over the past fourteen months.
"We have been by her side through what can only be described as a remarkable recovery from the appalling suffering she endured. At times we thought she just wouldn’t make it, with her age and underlying health conditions all against her.
"But Bella has fought every day, showing enviable strength and courage, not wanting to give up her fight to recover. We hope that she will now be able to live out the rest of her life with the love and respect that she always deserved.
"A special thanks to all our team at Radcliffe for their absolute devotion to their work and for their unfaltering efforts involved in Bella’s rehabilitation. It has been an emotional journey to say the least."
This week, the centre's social media will be focused on Bella — giving insight into her recovery, ensuring her fight to survive is not forgotten. Watch a video the centre has put together here.
