Runners out in force as Newark Half Marathon returns
More than 800 runners of all abilities took to Sconce and Devon Park to compete in the 31st Newark Half Marathon this morning.
After starting the race at 10am at the park, the runners went through Hawton, Farndon, Thorpe and Elston, before heading back to Newark.
The race returned after an absence of five years, with places to compete selling out well in advance.
Four clubs - Newark Athletic Club, Notfast Running Club, Newark Striders and Fernwood Running Club worked together to organise the event.
Dave Archer, 33, of Sheffield, was the first runner to cross the line after little over one hour nine minutes.
"It was brilliant," he said. "It's a cracking course - really flat and there was also great weather for it." he said.
"Obviously to win the race is a massive honour and it seems like a well-organised and well put together day."
Race organiser Peter Davis said he was pleased with how well the event had gone.
"Moving it to the park has helped us spread out and make it a fun family day, to see so many people here sitting on the grass is great," he said.
"The day wasn't without its occasional hiccup but everyone worked hard to make sure everything was sorted.
"I'm so grateful to the volunteers and the four clubs who helped to bring it back - it couldn't have happened without them.
A 2km fun run was also held around the park, with 80 people, including many children, helping to raise money for Beaumond House Hospice.
