Newark and Sherwood MPs Robert Jenrick and Mark Spencer included on Russia's 'stop list' as Kremlin hits back at UK government
Russia's foreign ministry has sanctioned the Newark and Sherwood MPs among others as it hits back at the British government's support for Ukraine.
Robert Jenrick and Mark Spencer, who is leader of the House of Commons, are included on the Kremlin's sanction list released just after 1pm today.
The foreign ministry announced it would continue to work on the expansion of the Russian 'stop list' in response to the British government's sanctions on oligarchs and the country itself following its invasion of Ukraine.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the MPs should regard the sanctions as a badge of honour, and multiple politicians welcomed being included on the list.
"Taking into account London's bet on the consistent strengthening of anti-Russian sanctions, work on retaliatory countermeasures, including the expansion of the Russian "stop list", will continue," said the Russian foreign ministry in a statement.
"The decision of the UK government to include 386 deputies of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation on the sanctions list, on the basis of reciprocity, imposes personal restrictions on 287 members of the House of Commons of the British Parliament.
"These persons, who are no longer allowed to enter the Russian Federation, took the most active part in the establishment of anti-Russian sanctions instruments in London, and contribute to the groundless whipping up of Russophobic hysteria in the UK.
"The hostile rhetoric and far-fetched accusations coming from the mouths of British parliamentarians not only condone the hostile course of London, aimed at demonising our country and its international isolation, but are also used by opponents of mutually respectful dialogue with Russia to undermine the foundation of bilateral cooperation."
Other MPs include Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Mansfield MP Ben Bradley (leader of Nottinghamshire County Council) Jacob Rees-Mogg, Steven Barclay and Michael Gove.
