A Sainsbury's supermarket complete with petrol station is being lined up for Newark.

Mulberry Developments, in partnership with Sainsbury’s, is unveiling plans to redevelop the former county council highways depot off Great North Road, Newark, creating up to 200 jobs.

The proposals, which will be unveiled at a public exhibition during the weekend of June 27-28, also feature significant highways investments, including a range of measures to improve traffic flow along Great North Road.

These include the potential widening of Great North Road to provide two lanes in each direction, as well as the addition of new traffic signals and improved operation of the level crossing in association with Network Rail to reduce congestion.

New pedestrian crossing facilities and improved cycle and pedestrian links to the town centre are also being proposed.

The dilapidated site, which has been vacant for over two years, could be transformed into a modern and sustainable Sainsbury’s foodstore, with carparking, a new petrol station and significant landscaping throughout.

The store would be designed using local materials and the landscaping could include a new tree-line along Great North Road.

A programme of public consultation will take place as the developers seek feedback from the community in order to refine their proposals ahead of submitting a planning application to Newark and Sherwood District Council in the coming months.

A public exhibition will take place at the Holy Trinity Community Centre on Boundary Road, Newark, between 3pm and 7pm on Friday June 27 and 10am and 2pm on Saturday June 28.

There will be carparking available and the regeneration plans can be seen in detail. There will also be opportunity to discuss them with members of the development team and provide feedback as part of the consultation.

Any residents unable to attend the exhibition can find out more and provide feedback at www.sainsburysnewark.co.uk which will launch on Friday June 27.

Mulberry Developments Director Oliver King said: “We are really looking forward to discussing our regeneration plans with local residents and key stakeholders, and we hope to be able to help create up to 200 jobs for local people.

“Our plans will see the dilapidated site brought back into use with a modern and sustainable foodstore, and we are also proposing significant new landscaping at the site and along Great North Road, to really revitalise this important gateway into Newark."
