The festive sound of Christmas carols was present in the Market Place this morning with a festive performance from the Newark Salvation Army Band.

They were assisted by members of Barnbygate, Charles Street and Hawtonville Methodist churches who joined in as part of a choir.

All the money raised from the event will go towards the Salvation Army Church.

The performance lasted for two hours, which was conducted by Salvation Army member Mr Keith Dicks.

This year is the first time Newark churches have been involved with the annual performance.

Mr Matt Elsey, Church leader of Salvation Army Newark, said it had been a great event to spread the Christmas message to a number of people.

"An event like this morning is a great tradition in our Christmas calendar and it's great to have the churches here to sing the carols.

"As well as making people aware of us over the festive period, it's also a lot of fun and it's great to see people take an interest.

Rev Philip Macdonald, who is the Chair of Churches Together, said it was a wonderful event to be a part of.

"This year we suggested it would be a good idea to join in and support each other and allow others to learn about what we do."
