Calypso Ink Tattoo has reopened at the South Church House in Market Square, Newark

A talented tattooist is delighted to be back in business — and is ready to show off her artistic skills by catering for all styles of inkwork.

Scarlet Meade, of Newark, opened Calypso Ink Tattoo in February 2023 at the South Church House in Market Square, Newark.

In November last year, Scarlet had to close the shop to go on maternity leave, however, after looking after herself and her baby, she was back in business in April 2024.

She started tattooing in 2021 and the business was something of a dream come true, as she always loved art and did art in school and in her own time at home.

Scarlet worked as a tattoo artist in Birmingham and then in Lincoln before opening her own studio in Newark.

“When I moved back to Lincoln to tattoo I was taught to do all styles of tattooing so I could eventually pick what I’d like to specialise in,” said Scarlet.

She added: “I decided I liked many different styles of work which is why I do it all, it keeps my job interesting and keeps me motivated to practice my art when drawing designs at home.

“I have built my clientele up since I’ve opened my studio but having time off when having my baby means that I’m having to rebuild it again which is going well but can be quite daunting at times as it’s a competitive industry.”

Her studio is a bright and quiet space which aims to offer a peaceful atmosphere.

“I feel the fact I do all different types of styles makes my studio special, as well as the fact I take time and care with each particular design whether it’s custom or not, changing the design as many times as the client wants to make it perfect for them.

“It is a long process opening up your own studio, from decorating to buying all new furniture, products and equipment, sorting out clinics waste bins, to getting a license approved from the council.

“It takes a lot but it is so worth it.”
