A special assembly was held for a school lollipop lady who is retiring after 33 years.

Children and staff at Holy Trinity Catholic Academy, Newark, presented Mrs Chris Dowman with cards and flowers to thank her for helping pupils to safely cross Boundary Road.

Mrs Dowman started in 1985 as relief cover when her supervisor asked if she wanted to be a lollipop lady.

“I started and never looked back and I have had a brilliant time over the years,” she said.

“Everyone at the school has been amazing, particularly when my husband died. Thy were all so supportive.”

Mrs Dowman, of Balderton, said: “I have enjoyed every minute of it but I am getting towards 70. I have done my bit.”

She said she was good friends with a lot of those she had seen grow up over the years.

Zena Oliver, road safety manager for Via, Nottinghamshire County Council’s highways contractor, said: “Her dedication over 33 years is outstanding.

“Over that time she has done about 900,000 crossings.”

Holy Trinity head Mrs Julia Summers said: “One of our priorities is to get children into school safely across the busy road and it has been great to have someone who has been so dedicated and welcoming for the children.”
