Six schools competed in Newark Schools Chess Competition at John Blow Primary School




Six schools were involved in the first round of the Newark Schools Chess Competition hosted by John Blow Primary School, Collingham.

Holy Trinity Catholic Academy, Newark, are in the lead with 11 points. Second are Sutton-on-Trent Primary School with ten points.

Barnby Road Academy, Newark, the winners of the 2018 competition, have 9.5 points with the A team from Highfields School, Newark, fourth with nine points.

Manners Sutton Primary, Averham, entered the competition for the first time.

A total of 56 children took part, with 14 teams each with four players.

Each child played three games and a medal was presented by the competition sponsors, Tallents Solicitors, to nine children who won all three games.

The competition was controlled by Mr John Crawley, the head of Nottinghamshire Junior Chess. He said there had been some very close games and the standard of chess had been very good.

Two further rounds will be held next year and then the scores from all three events will be totalled together to find the winner.
