Search for Newarks best building
Voting starts a week today in the latest Newark Civic Awards scheme that rewards high standard construction and restoration developments.
The scheme is being organised jointly by the Advertiser, Newark Civic Trust, Newark and Sherwood District Council and Newark Town Council.
It is held every three years in recognition of developments that enhance the appearance and environment of Newark and surrounding villages.
The main categories are: best residential conversion, best non-residential conversion, best residential new build, best non-residential new build, best enhancement scheme, and shop front improvement.
The public can vote from a list of short-listed properties selected by the scheme’s committee. Forms will be in next week’s Advertiser.
A category for best new education development will be judged by a panel from the committee.
This is open to schools, colleges and any other developments built within the past three years that are used for educational purposes.
The winners will be announced on November 26 at Newark Town Hall, where they will be presented with a plaque and a certificate.
The chairman of Newark Civic Trust planning committee, Mr Bill Davidson, said: “I think the downturn in the economy has meant there have been fewer developments to choose from this time around but I do think the standard has been maintained.
“There have been quite a few good developments.
“On previous occasions recipients have been delighted to receive an award. It shows the appreciation of local people,” he said.
Mr John Coen of CF Construction, Collingham, was presented with the best conversion scheme award in 2005 for his work at the former Newark Arms public house on Appletongate, which has been converted into apartments, with an archway to an enclosed carpark.
He said: “It was nice to get that. It’s a worthwhile idea.
“People do remark on the plaque.”
