A man has been arrested and bailed after more than 1,100 plants were found near a Nottinghamshire village.

The plants were discovered on Monday in a disused underground air-raid shelter and a second above-ground building on a former airfield near the village of Wigsley.

Acting on information received from a member of the public, officers from Nottinghamshire Police executed a warrant at the site shortly after 8am.

The plants have now been removed from the site at Wigsley for destruction.

A 59-year-old man attended Newark Police Station on Monday afternoon. He was arrested on suspicion of drugs cultivation and later released on police bail pending further enquiries.

The discovery follows the seizure of 3,000 plants from an industrial unit in Newark last month.

Chief Inspector Sean Anderson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This is the second significant cannabis operation in the Newark area that we have discovered and curtailed within a matter of a fortnight, which demonstrates that we are obtaining excellent intelligence from a variety of sources.

“On this occasion, it was valuable information from the public which led officers to obtain a search warrant.

"We will always act on credible intelligence provided to us, and I would urge anyone who knows of or suspects criminal activity in Nottinghamshire to contact the police immediately.”

Anyone with information about this cannabis operation or who believes they have seen suspicious activity in the area is urged to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 119 of March 5.

Alternatively, they can call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
