Newark MP Robert Jenrick and Chris Philp MP, the Police and Fire Minister, pledge to work with national bodies to introduce spot checks at caravan parks following death of Louisiana, 2
In my years as your Member of Parliament, few surgery appointments have been as moving as when my constituent Natasha came to see me earlier this year, writes Newark and Bingham MP Robert Jenrick.
Natasha tragically lost her two year old daughter Louisiana in a horrific caravan fire during a family holiday in Lincolnshire. She almost died herself.
The caravan in question, which Natasha had rented for her holiday, lacked a functioning smoke alarm, an up-to-date gas safety certificate and a fire risk assessment - all simple, but critical safety features.
Rightly Natasha seeks answers and justice, as well as action to avert future tragedies and bring some hope from this appalling incident.
To pursue justice and a safer future, Natasha and I met with Chris Philp MP, the Police and Fire Minister down in Westminster. By accompanying Natasha as her local Member of Parliament, our shared objective was clear: ensuring that Louisiana’s death and Natasha’s dreadful loss become catalysts for change.
The Minister and I are committed to implementing measures that prevent similar incidents and safeguard lives in caravan park site facilities.
Within the coming weeks, the Police and Fire Minister and I will work together to encourage national bodies representing caravan park site across the country to put in place safety spot-checks. We will work towards implementing safety measures, including reminding visitors to check their own caravans and boilers.
Strengthening legal responsibilities and reinforcing safety protocols will ensure owners prioritise guest safety - it is entirely unacceptable that Natasha has until now not been able to pursue legal action and achieve justice. Functional fire and smoke alarms, along with up-to-date gas certificates and fire risk assessments must be rigorously maintained.
If you’re on holiday in a rented caravan or chalet, please check the smoke alarm and always demand standards are adhered to.
Families embarking on holiday adventures must be assured that their safety is of the utmost importance. These efforts go beyond addressing the immediate aftermath of this tragedy; Natasha and I, together with the Minister, strive for a nationwide approach to fire and gas safety in all caravan park sites.
Holidays should be cherished moments of joy and relaxation.
