Sending cards that help good causes

A charity Christmas card stall in Newark Parish Church was officially opened by the Mayor of Newark, Mr Tony Roberts.

The cards on sale are from 28 national and local charities, including Mencap, Age UK and Save The Children.

The Newark stall is in its third year and is part of the countrywide scheme, Cards For Good Causes, which last year raised £61/2m.

Mr Roberts said: “Christmas is about charity and giving. If you are going to send a card, then send a charity one.

“In these times people are relying more on charities and volunteers and it’s wonderful that people are willing to give their time and energy.”

Mrs Tricia Menzies, Newark’s volunteer manager, said despite worries the recession would affect charities, she was always surprised be people’s generosity. She is helped by nine volunteers, all friends of hers, who hope to continue the good work of the previous years.

She said: “Church and charity go hand in hand and the church has been incredibly helpful. We have already had a positive response.

“Cards are still an important part of Christmas and can be recycled. People love to receive them and it gives distant family the chance to receive updates, which is nice.”

Mr Roberts said he would be sending cards to friends and family far away.

However, he thought sending an e-card and donating separately was perfectly acceptable. There is a collection tin at the stall.

The shop will be open from 9.30am to 3.30pm, Wednesday to Saturday, until December 17.
