An event has been launched promoting options and opportunities for careers, training and education in Newark and Sherwood.

The Future First Expo takes place at the Lady Eastwood Pavilion, Newark Showground, from 9.30am to 4.30pm on Thursday, May 4. Admission is free.

Business and education providers will be on hand to talk about the opportunities available in the district.

There will also be break-out rooms and seminars covering a wide range of subjects.

The event is being organised by Newark and Sherwood District Council, Lincoln College Group and the Advertiser Media Group, and is being sponsored by British Sugar.

British Sugar, which has recruited and trained more than 90 apprentices in the last decade, employs just under 200 permanent and contract staff at its Newark factory.

"Excellent opportunity"

Mr Graham Heatrick, Newark factory manager for British Sugar, said: “We are always looking for talented individuals to join our organisation.

“We believe that events like this are an excellent opportunity for young people to learn more about what’s out there, whether it’s jobs, further education or training schemes.

“They are also a great way for employers to showcase their operations, share their success stories and generally talk about what they have to offer.”

Rachel Wilson, sales and marketing director for the Advertiser Media Group, said: “As the leading provider of news and information for the local area the Advertiser Media Group is delighted to be partnering Newark and Sherwood District Council and the Lincoln College Group in the organisation of the Future First Expo.

“Raising aspirations of young adults in this area and showcasing the range of careers and educational opportunities that are available locally is integral to the ongoing success of the area, something that the Advertiser works hard to support wherever we can.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for businesses to showcase what is great about a career in their company and convince our home-grown talent to remain just that, at home.”

More than 1,000 students from secondary schools — who are about to make decisions on whether they continue their education or move into work — have been invited to the event. It is also open to the public.

Julie Reader-Sullivan, business manager (economic growth) at the district council, said: “This event is the first of its kind.

“We have asked that the people who have stands make sure their displays are interactive and there is information about careers.

“It’s about what’s right for each individual. For example, there are some fabulous apprenticeships out there — and British Sugar’s apprenticeships are second-to-none.
“Apprenticeships also have no age restriction, so you could be applying at the age of 50.

“There are so many opportunities out there.”

Mr James Newall, head of marketing and communications at Lincoln College Group, said: “Students in Newark can get everything they need about their future choices at this event.

“There will be lots of experts on hand to give advice, including on higher education options.”
