Sherwood Labour candidate joins in Nottingham Pride celebrations

A Sherwood Labour candidate took to Nottingham's streets to celebrate the Pride event over the weekend.

Jerry Hague, Labour candidate for Sherwood, was among people getting colourful on Saturday as crowds gathered to celebrate diversity.

The annual event welcomes everyone regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation in an eventful and rainbow-inspired gathering.

Rain failed to dampen the enthusiasm and spirits of the thousands who followed a bright rainbow-road throughout Nottingham on Saturday, including Jerry Hague and Ollerton Labour branch members.

Jerry explained that in increasingly unpredictable times, it is important that every individual feels protected and respected from the threat of racism and bigotry that shows "its ugly face on a daily basis".

"We are having to re-run arguments that I thought we had already won 30 years ago and I ask everyone to support your communities and prevent those who seek discord from dividing us," said Jerry.

Shops throughout the city centre created Pride-inspired shop fronts and displays to show solidarity with all those celebrating, with a view to breaking down stereotypes and prejudices.

Jerry said: "Our society is stronger if every individual feels part of it and is free to express his or her talents to the full, rather than being victimised or discriminated.

"It is always encouraging when such a wide range of people join together as they did at Nottingham Pride to show what positive energy we can create if we support each other."
