A charity shop that will be raising money for the New Life Children’s Centre in The Gambia opens in The Arcade, Newark, on Saturday.

More than 60 volunteers are involved in the project to help raise money for the charity based at the Everyday Champions Centre, Newark.

The charity’s sponsorship director, Mrs Sylvia Morgan, said the shop would sell dresses, jewellery, bags and carvings made by hand in The Gambia and help to provide a market for Gambian workers.

She said they had found four sellers to provide the stock, which would be bought along the lines of the Fair Trade process. They would also be selling donated items, including furniture and electrical goods.

Mrs Morgan said: “We have felt for some time that we wanted somewhere in the town centre and these premises seemed ideal.”

Money raised will go towards building ten classrooms at the Half Dye school.

The shop will also be working with charities such as Newark HomeStart to help promote its services and activities.
