Assault, theft and driving offences among latest Newark area cases from Nottingham Magistrates’ Court
A prolific shoplifter who stole £56 of vodka and £50 of butter has been jailed after breaching his suspended sentence.
Raymond Wayne Canham, also known as Raymond Cannon, 50, of Tolney Lane, Newark, appeared at Nottingham Magistrates Court on June 3.
Canham admitted to failing to comply with with a community requirement of his suspended sentence order, by failing to attend on April 30 and May 10.
He was dealt with for his original offence and jailed for 12 weeks — which had previously been suspended for 12 months when he was sentenced on April 26.
Canham stole two bottles of AU vodka worth £56 from ASDA Newark on December 26, 2023, stole chocolate bars and washing gels to the value of £20 from the Co-op on January 7, 2024, stole of items to the value of £94 from Welcome Break Services on January 14, stole items to the value of £11 from the Co-op on January 28, and stole Lurpak to the value of £50 from the Co-op on April 21.
Also among the latest cases from our area to come before the court was also a man who assaulted a police officer at a train station.
Thomas Workman, 40, of Sleaford Road, Newark, pleaded guilty to the offence during an appearance at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on May 24.
He assaulted a police constable at Kings Norton Rail Station, Bournville, on September 28, 2023.
Workman was sentenced to prison for four months, suspended for 24 months due to the severity of the offence.
During the 24-month supervision period he must comply with rehabilitation activity — up to a maximum of 16 days — and attend appointments as set by a responsible officer.
He was also ordered to pay compensation of £100.
Jordan Luke Shelbourne, 31, of Walesby Lane, Ollerton, also appeared before magistrates for sentencing on June 3.
Shelbourne had previously pleaded guilty to speeding during an appearance on April 18.
On September 20, 2023, he drove a Mercedes at 41mph on A38 Kings Mill Road/Kirkby Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield. The road has a 30mph limit.
He was fined £307 and ordered to pay costs of £213.
Shelbourne was also disqualified for holding or obtaining a driving licence for six months, due to repeat offending.
Uninsured driver Tomasz Wodrowski, 45, of Mather Road, Newark avoided disqualification.
Wodrowski appeared in court on May 29 for sentencing, having pleaded guilty on March 18.
He drove a Ford on Boundary Road, Newark, without insurance on August 6, 2023.
He was fined £306, ordered to pay costs of £212, and has six points added to his licence.
Wodrowski avoided disqualification due to the impact it would have on his job — and on his partner and son.
Appearing before magistrates on May 31, Jerome Mellon, 48, of Belvoir Crescent, Newark was fined £120 and ordered to pay costs of £148 for failing to ensure his child regularly attended school between October 9, 2023 and March 1, 2024.
He had pleaded guilty on May 13.
Cetin Ramis, 60, of Northgate, Newark, was fined £50 and ordered to pay costs of £90 when his case was heard on May 28, for breaching a domestic violence protection order on May 27 made by the court on May 24.
He admitted the breach.
