Eggs and ketchup were thrown at cash machines and shop windows in Newark town centre overnight in a vandalism attack.

Ketchup was seen smeared on several shop windows and on cash machines in and around the market place this morning.

Eggs and egg shells were also left on businesses and left strewn on paths and roads.

Shops and businesses in the Market Place, Bridge Street, Cartergate, Middlegate, Kirkgate and Stodman Street were among those affected.

They included banks Santander and Barclays, estate agents Winkworth, William H Brown and Newton Fallowell, Nottingham Building Society, clothing retailer South Lincs Clothing, Sibley's Butchers, stationers Osborne's and café and bookshop Stray's.

A shopkeeper, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: "It's not trick or treating, it's vandalism.

"Trick or treating is for kids going round dressed up asking for sweets.

"It's all on CCTV so let's see if the powers that be can do anything."

Mrs Amanda Robertson, of South Lincs Clothing, said: "We had tomato sauce on the windows and a bit of egg.

"It looks like by the time they got to us they were running out of steam.

"It wasn't too bad here but Osborne's had it worse than us.

"It's something you don't need at 9 o'clock in the morning."

It was a busier than usual morning for window cleaner Mr John Walters and his two colleagues from Walters Cleaning Services.

Their town centre round, which covers around 24 shops and businesses, took around an hour-and-a-half longer than the usual two hours.

Mr Walters said: "This is the worst one we've had in many years - it's ridiculous really.

"Previous years haven't been too bad but this year has been particularly bad.

"Five or six years ago there was a spate of it, with silly string, eggs and shaving foam but since then we've not really had anything.

"This year it is horrendous and just about every shop we have done has been absolutely covered.

"It's taken us a lot longer to get through and we're standing the cost of it."
