Newark Parish Church choristers set off on their Voice for Life journey

Two choristers from Newark Parish Church have gained their light blue badges.

William and Judah were delighted to be given this award in recognition of the achievements they have made since joining the church’s famous choir.

Director of Music Dr Stephen Bullamore said: “Our choristers, both boys and girls, follow the Royal School of Church Music’s Voice for Life scheme.

“After our new singers have demonstrated various skills, they gain different coloured ribbons on their badges. After the first badge, with a light blue ribbon, our choristers will work towards their dark blue, red and then golden ribbons.

“They gain a terrific sense of achievement from the progress they make.”

Both Judah and William take advantage of the church’s scheme, supported by the Magnus Foundation and the Cathedral Music Trust, which offers them piano and singing lessons free of charge.

There is a fine, 500 year-old tradition of children singing in St Mary’s choir.

They sing as part of a team of choristers, developing their minds and enriching the lives of those around them.

They make friends and engage with some of the finest music known to mankind.

“Some former members of the choir have gained A-levels and diplomas in music; some have gone on to study music at university and beyond,” said Dr Bullamore.

“It isn’t just about those who go on to become specialist musicians, though.

“Any child can learn to sing and contribute to our choir, gaining life skills and enjoying being involved in music-making for its own sake.”

The church is now inviting children in years three to six (aged 7–11) to join as choristers. These young people who sing in the church choir are given singing and music lessons to support their learning. There are also opportunities for teenagers and adults to get involved.

Dr Bullamore said: “I’m really excited about meeting young people who want to explore joining the choir here at St Mary Magdalene.

“It doesn’t matter whether or not you have sung in a choir before or whether your parents have sung in a choir.

“We will help you develop all the skills you need.”

He also noted that those who took up singing while still young often enjoyed it throughout the rest of their lives.

“Singing regularly as part of church worship is a life-changing and life-enhancing experience; I am thrilled that we are able to offer it here in Newark,” he said.
