Soldier named a local hero
A recognition award for personal achievement and inspiration has been made to injured Grenadier Guardsman Lance-sergeant Nathan Cumberland, of Fernwood.
It was made by judges of the Newark and Sherwood District Council Citizen Of The Year Award.
Lance-sergeant Cumberland, who lost both legs while serving in Afghanistan in October 2009, was unable to receive the award as he was in the rehabilitation unit at Headley Court.
But some of his family were at Kelham Hall and the award was accepted by his wife, Mrs Rachael Cryer. The couple were married in October.
He was nominated by Fernwood parish councillor Francine McKay who said he was a true local hero and a deserving nominee for an award.
He took part in this year’s Newark Half-marathon, raising £4,000 for the Newark Patriotic Fund, and covered 385 miles in five days in a Help For Heroes race from Brussels to Holland.
She said: “He has retained a positive, selfless attitude throughout his physical and emotional journey over the past year.”
The winner of the 26-59-years age category was Edwinstowe parish councillor Mr Keith Bennison, who was nominated by district councillors Shirley Moore and Pam Bird.
He set up Edwinstowe Young People’s Action Group and organised activities including African drumming.
He set up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme and two years ago received an award for his outstanding contribution to the scheme.
The winner of the over-60 award was Mr Brian White, of Clipstone, a member of Clipstone St John Ambulance Division for almost 60 years. He is also a member of the Royal British Legion and involved with the Vicar Water project in the village.
The winners of a poster competition organised in conjunction with the event were Rachel Skipper from John Blow Primary School, Collingham, and Tia North from Bishop Alexander Primary School, Newark.
