Southwell Youth Cavern returns after six years closed

A youth club is to be relaunched six years after it last closed.

Southwell Youth Cavern will initially open one evening a week, but there are hopes it will eventually open on five nights.

It is based in the basement of Southwell Methodist Church.

“We want the youth of the town to have somewhere safe that they can go and make their own, to feel welcome, to belong.” said the Rev Peter Hibberts.

Aimed at young people aged 11 to 14, it will offer a wide range of activities, including board games, pool tables, Xbox and video games, and an outdoor area.

“It’s a really relaxed environment, it’s not the kind of place we tell them what to do, it’s their space and almost their rules, but not quite.” said Pete Herniman, the previous Southwell Youth Club chairman, who will work as a volunteer at the centre.

It will initially open on Wednesdays, from 6.30pm to 9pm, with a charge of 50p per session.

However, the first two sessions — on September 28 and October 5 — will be free of charge.

To take part in the Southwell Youth Cavern, there is an online form to register at https://southwellyouthclub.wixsite.com/southwellyc/blank-2

There is capacity for 25 children to attend the sessions.
