Spooky stay awaits undercroft camper

A man will brave possible ghostly goings-on when he spends a night alone in the undercroft of Newark Castle — reportedly one of the town’s most haunted places.

Mr Jamie Scott, 22, of Mead Way, Balderton, wants to raise £1,000 for Children In Need.

He plans to broadcast his challenge, a week on Friday, live on the internet using an infra-red camera.

To make his spooky ordeal even tougher, Mr Scott has compiled a list of luxury items he will gradually discard as he moves closer to his fundraising target.

He has already lost his pillow after raising £30. He will lose his sleeping bag at £100, flask of tea at £160, mobile phone at £250, and torch at £1,000.

Mr Scott, who has previously raised money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital with a parachute jump, said he wanted to do something a bit different for his latest challenge.

“I’m not sure how frightening it’s going to be and it could be a lot worse if I lose all my luxury items,” he said.

“I don’t know if I’ll end up coming out with white hair.”

Mr Scott said he wanted to support Children In Need because all the money raised went directly to charity.

“What they do is fantastic and they help so many people,” he said.

“All the money raised goes to someone who needs it. I’m just spending one night alone in the castle. There are people out there a lot worse off.”

The undercroft was used as a storage area for food and munitions but was also reputedly used for satanic rituals.

Paranormal investigators have reported strange lights, unexplained voices, and objects moving by themselves.
