Students from the Minster School, Southwell, organised a day of sports activities for 70 children from local primary and junior schools.

The day had an Olympic theme with different groups representing different countries.

The event was organised by Minster pupils aged 16 and 17 who are completing the Community Sports Leadership Award scheme.

The schools that took part were Bleasby, Kirklington, Halam, Lowe’s Wong junior, and the Minster School’s junior department.

The children, aged nine to 11, took part in a range of activities including bean bag relay races, obstacle courses and parachute games.

Students raised £150 to pay for equipment and were given refreshments for the younger children by the Southwell branch of the Co-op.

One of the leaders, Kirsty Rogers (17) said: “Everything went extremely smoothly and all the children seemed to have a great time.”

She hopes the extra qualifications gained through the sports leadership scheme will help her when she applies to university.

Hope Lloyd (17) wanted to take part in the award scheme because she thought it would help her in her future career.

She said: “I want to do nursing and I thought the award would be a good way to get more people skills and dealing with younger people is a really good experience.”
