Stars shine in operatic show

The latest production from Newark Amateur Operatic Society, 42nd Street, opened at Newark’s Palace Theatre last night and was a real treat.

The comic musical takes a look behind the scenes at the production of a depression-era Broadway show, Pretty Lady.

The show is packed with some wonderful music, great tap dancing routines and fantastic and colourful Broadway show costumes.

Georgina Tagg steals the show as diva Dorothy Brock, a hard-bitten star who finally reveals she does have a heart. But equally good was sixth-form student Justine Lee as Peggy Sawyer, a small town girl with big dreams. She can sing, she can act, she can dance and is clearly a star in the making.

Full marks to director Lisa Lee and musical director Hugh Casterton for yet another marvellous production. It runs until Saturday.
