Station is among country’s quietest
A railway station that has just two services a day is the tenth quietest in Great Britain.
Just 128 passengers used Elton and Orston Station, which is on the Nottingham to Skegness line, between April 2016 and March 2017.
Figures released by the Office of Rail and Road show the number of people boarding or getting off at the station has fallen from 296 last year.
In 2014-15, the station was eight quietest in Great Britain, with just 88 people using it.
Two services call at Elton and Orston station on weekdays and Saturdays. There are no services on Sundays.
The first service of the day, which departs Grantham at 6.10am, calls at Elton and Orston at 6.25am and reaches Nottingham at 6.54am.
The other service, which leaves Nottingham at 4.45pm, calls at Elton and Orston at 5.10pm and reaches Grantham at 5.28pm and Skegness at 7.05pm.
'I'm sure there is a demand'
Mr Will Gunn, chairman of Orston Parish Council, said: “The reason we don’t use the station is because nothing stops there.
“More people would use it if the trains stopped.”
Mr Gunn said the parish council had asked East Midlands Trains for more services to stop at Orston.
“They say it doesn’t stop there because of a lack of use, but there is a lack of use because it doesn’t stop there,” he said.
Mr Gunn said he had suggested that East Midlands Trains had a three-month trial period of more frequent services for Orston.
“I am sure there is a demand,” he said.
The quietest station in Great Britain was Barry Links, in Angus, Scotland, which was used by 21 passengers.
The busiest station was London Waterloo with 99,403,096 users.
