Temperatures are set to soar this week across Newark and the surrounding areas.
The Met Office is predicting scorching temperatures all this week, peaking at 32°c on Thursday, to kick off the school holidays.
Although the heat may be fun for some, the heatwave can be dangerous for babies and young children and the elderly, who are at risk of dehydration and heatstroke.
Here's some advice on keeping cool in the heat:
- Keeping curtains and blinds shut during the day will keep out the heat and, if it's safe to do so, keep windows open to let the air circulate
- Fans are also a good way to keep air flowing through
- Avoid direct sun during its hottest period, between 11am to 3pm
- It may seem obvious, but it's vital to keep hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids
- Heat rises, so if your bedroom is on the top floor of your house and it gets too hot, consider sleeping downstairs until temperatures cool down
It's very important to keep babies and young children cool in this hot weather. Here's some recommendations:
- Keep children in the shade or indoors during the hottest part of the day (between 11am and 3pm)
- Make sure little ones wear a hat and very high factor suncream at all times when outdoors
- At bedtime, its important to not let babies overheat. The Lullaby Trust has plenty of advice on how to dress your baby for bed, which can be found here.
- Splashing around in a cool paddling pool can help keep children cool
- If your child's room gets too hot, hanging damp towels over radiators can help keep temperatures down
