Stolen car recovered from River Trent

A vehicle found submerged in the River Trent is believed to have been stolen in a burglary at a Newark car dealership.

The silver Vauxhall Corsa was spotted in the water near to Newark Castle at about 7.20am today (Friday 24 February).

The underwater search unit from Nottinghamshire Police attended the incident to confirm there was no one inside the car, which was recovered from the river.

Officers investigating the incident believe the Vauxhall Corsa was abandoned after being stolen in a burglary at the Lovett and Lovett car dealership, in London Road, Newark.

Offenders broke down part of a wall to gain access to the forecourt where they forced their way into the office and snatched keys for vehicles at the premises.

The Vauxhall Corsa and another vehicle, a blue Peugeot 206, were stolen in the incident.

The Peugeot has not been located and officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to call police immediately.

The break-in at the car dealership happened at some point after 6pm yesterday (Thursday 23 February).
