Store marks two decades
The first major supermarket to open in Newark celebrated its 20th anniversary at the weekend. Staff will mark the occasion a week today with a buffet.
The 34,000sq ft Morrisons store serves 38,000 customers a week and employs 398 staff.
Eight of the original staff members still work there and each received flowers on Wednesday from the store manager, Miss Dawn Thompson.
They will also receive maximum pay bonuses for their 20 years’ service with the company.
Mrs Cindy Page (64) of Stanhope Avenue, Newark, said the busiest time she remembered was the first Christmas that the store was open.
“People were fighting to get in and climbing over trolleys,” she said.
Mrs Page said the people she worked alongside had made the job enjoyable over the years.
The other staff members to have been there 20 years are Mrs Sheila Anderson (59) of Norman Avenue, Newark, Maria Marum (56) of Grange Road, Newark, Mrs Lynne Hudson (48) of Fledborough, Mrs Kathy Speed (54) of Crown Street, Newark, Mrs Pat Preston (61) of Winthorpe Road, Newark, Mrs Dawn Naylor and Mrs Joyce Crossman.
Miss Thompson has worked for Morrisons for 20 years and been the Newark store manager for five.
She said: “Everyone becomes a second family here and we are loyal to them.”
