Channel 4 documentary The Interrogation of Tony Martin will be shown on Sunday night
A Channel 4 documentary being aired on Sunday night will revisit the story of a Norfolk farmer who shot two Newark burglars.
The programme, The Interrogation of Tony Martin, will be shown at 9pm.
It tells the story of what happened the night Tony Martin confronted two burglars who broke into his farmhouse in 1999.
The burglars, Brendon Fearon, then 29, and 16-year-old Fred Barras, had forced their way into Martin’s home one night with the intention to steal from him.
Mr Martin, who had been plagued by burglaries and had lost faith in the police, fired his shotgun as the two attempted to escape through a window.
Fred Barras was found dead the following day, and Mr Martin’s actions divided public opinion. Brendon Fearon, who was injured in the shooting, was later convicted of conspiring to burgle Mr Martin’s home, and sentenced to three years in prison.
Fearon had answered a letter written to him by an Advertiser reporter from his jail cell while on remand, in which he gave his account of what happened and expressed his regret at Fred's death.
The documentary stars Steve Pemberton as Tony Martin, with Daniel Mays and Stuart Graham as detectives.
It the focuses on the intense three days when Martin was interviewed by police for murder, and asks if he was a vulnerable farmer using reasonable force to protect himself and his property, or a reckless vigilante, ready and willing to kill.
With every word spoken sourced from original documents, the drama uncovers the missing part of a story that split the country and generated hundreds of newspaper headlines.
