Southwell Town Council complete survey of residents and businesses as plans progress for Saturday closure of King Street
Plans for a pedestrianised town centre are progressing, with survey results revealing strong support for the change.
Southwell Town Council is seeking the closure of King Street to vehicles, excluding emergency vehicles, from 9am to 3pm on Saturdays.
The main shopping street of the town, and home to the market square, it is hoped closing the road to vehicles will allow more people to shop safely in the town.
The council has been in discussion with highways authority Via East Midlands regarding the closure for a significant period of time, and has now completed the necessary public consultation.
Malcom Brock reported the results of two surveys at a full council meeting — saying the residents’ survey had an 80% positive response and while only recieving seven responses, the business’ survey recorded 100% positive feedback.
He told the council that some businesses wanted to see it extended to Queen Street too, but that would not be taken any further until the King Street closure was in place.
Malcolm said: “My view is that we have more than enough evidence to put forward to get this moving forward.
“We have been thorough in this and have solid evidence now.”
Among the comments from businesses, one respondant branded it as necessary.
Another said: “I would suggest even further and fully pedestrianising King Street outside of these hours, on a permanent basis. Seven days a week.”
Others raised concerns about businesses’ deliveries, access for residents and the closure potentially pushing more traffic to Queen Street, which also has many shops and narrow pavements.
The new council, after the May elections, will have a meeting with Via to progress the plans.
