A walking group has been awarded accreditation by Walking For Health, a Natural England initiative that sets standards for organised health walks.

The Barnby Gate Strollers was originally formed through Barnbygate Surgery, Newark, after doctors suggested a walking group.

The group, which meets on Wednesday mornings, earned accreditation after demonstrating it met required criteria by offering led walks for beginners and meeting safety and insurance standards.

Member Mr Harold Pacey, 73, of Balderton, said: “We started with seven members and now we have roughly 38, so the group has grown quickly since the inception of the idea 18 months ago.

“There is a healthy relaxed atmosphere and we are a friendly group. We are hoping we can develop further as a highlight for me has been enjoying meeting new members.”

Walks have developed from locally in Newark to new places.

Mr Pacey said: “We have exhausted most of the walks in Newark and last week we went out to Southwell.”

The group is helped by Mr Stuart Green, a healthy lifestyle officer from Newark and Sherwood’s District Council’s sports development team.

He helps with co-ordinating walks, updating the register of members, giving feedback to Natural England and helps write new programmes.

Free walk leader training is available on September 27, from 10am to 4pm at Kelham Hall. To book call 01636 655707.
