Sir William Robertson Academy students dazzle audiences with hit musical Chicago




An academy’s production of Chicago was a resounding success.

Sir William Robertson Academy’s 2021 production of Chicago (High School Edition) took place during December starring talented students.

More than 40 pupils from years seven to 13 were cast in their version of the West End and Broadway hit musical, directed by head of drama Miss Bryony Burrough.

Chicago, an 1975 American musical with music by John Kander, is set in the jazz age and is based on a play by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about two 1924 murder cases and explores themes of manipulation, flawed criminal justice and the celebrity criminal.

Students performed the stories of two murderous women and beginning with a performance by nightclub star Velma Kelly ­— who has just killed her sister and her husband ­— played by Saffron Simpson.

Fame-hungry Roxie Hart, played by Evie Andrews, fatally shoots her boyfriend Fred Casely, played by James Statham, after he fails to provide important showbusiness connections that will further her career.

The story follows their subsequent meeting as inmates and the quest to clear Roxie’s name.

The show included well-known show-stoppers such as All That Jazz and Razzle Dazzle, as well as iconic choreography.

Other lead roles in the musical were played by Daryl Smith from Caythorpe, as Billy Flynn, Charlie Moreland from Long Bennington, as Amos, Molly Raspin from Lincoln, as Mama Morton, Abigail Rowlands from Newark, as Sergeant Fogarty, and Chloe Francis from Welbourn, as Mary Sunshine.

Visitors to the show commented on the school’s Facebook page describing the performance as fantastic and congratulated everyone involved.
