Students at Sir William Robertson Academy, Welbourn, raise thousands of pounds for Teenage Cancer Trust in honour of Newark teenager fighting cancer

More than £4,000 was raised for a charity by a group whose friend is fighting cancer.

The teenagers held a charity football match at their school, Sir William Robertson Academy in Welbourn, in honour of 17-year-old Dan Evans from Newark, who was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma.

The £500 target set by the friends, who are all in Year 13, was smashed just hours after a JustGiving page went live, and in total they raised £4,245.

A Sfor the group said: “Organising this event, which will help our dear friend Dan and many others going through a similar situation, has been something that we will all remember and cherish.”

The two teams – female students and male staff vs male students and female staff – was played in front of a big group of spectators, who were cheering them on.

The female students and male staff won, 2-1.

The students decided to support the Teenage Cancer Trust as Dan, who lives in Newark with his mum Natalya, is receiving treatment in a Nottingham hospital ward funded by the charity.

Daryl Smith, Dan’s best friend, said:”Thank you for the support, we all really enjoyed the day, and we are glad that it could go towards such a good cause.”

Isobel Bates added: “The match was really fun, and it was great to raise money for such an amazing charity.”
