Minster School Students' Young Enterprise challenge raises nearly £2000 for charity
Nearly £2,000 was raised by students and shared between two good causes.
Year ten students at The Minster School, Southwell, took part in the 10X Challenge, a Young Enterprise project.
They work in small teams to make as much money as possible from a £10 loan. Over four weeks, the students were hard at work selling everything from home-made keyrings, to car washing services, to sweets.
During the final week of the project a trades fair was held in the school where the students were able to sell their products to staff and other students.
In total the students raised a massive £2,375.43, which meant that, after returning the original £10s to Young Enterprise, they had made a £1825.43 profit.
After neck-and-neck voting, the Children’s Bereavement Centre and Reach Learning Disability were chosen to split the funds between.
The bereavement centre received a cheque from the winning team of Isobel, Tamzin, Daisy, Jess, Lilly and Charlotte who raised over £400.
Rachel Wilson, fundraising manager at the centre, said: “We were delighted when The Minster School contacted us to tell us they were taking part in the 10X challenge and raising money for the Children’s Bereavement Centre as one of their chosen charities. What an amazing concept, giving the pupils £10 to invest into a business idea with any profits made donated to charity.
“Not only inspiring them to think of a business idea or service but also educating them about how to market, sell and even about paying back the initial £10 loan and investing in the future with the legacy contribution. They obviously had some great ideas as they raised a staggering total of £912 for the Children’s Bereavement Centre.
“These funds will have a huge impact at the centre and could help fund one-to-one support for children and young people that are going through one of the most devastating times in their life, the death or terminal illness diagnosis of someone important in their lives. So, on behalf of all the team at the CBC and the local families we support, a heartfelt thank you to all the Minster students involved for all their hard work and for enabling us to change the lives of local children and young people. I look forward to seeing some of the pupils on a future series of The Apprentice.”
Laura from Reach Learning Disability visited the school with some of her team to meet runners-up, Will, Molly, Elizabeth, Ellie, Jaya, Pola and Evie, all of whom helped their teams raise over £100.
Laura said: “It makes such a difference to have our local community behind us in supporting our work to help people with learning disabilities in Southwell live happier, healthier lives.”
