Success at Special Olympics Anniversary Games
Three footballers returned home with bronze medals after competing in the Special Olympics GB Anniversary Games in Scotland.
Matthew Johnson, 19, James Hunsley, 19, and Jake Ramsay, 17, all of Newark, were part of the East Midlands team.
After two grading matches — to make sure players were against others of similar ability — the team played six games, before contesting a play-off for the bronze medal.
Claire Hunsley, who assists the coach running the team, said: "The Special Olympics is primarily about inclusion rather than winning.
"In every game they play with such drive and passion that they melt the hearts of those who watch."
The anniversary games, held at Stirling University, celebrated 40 years since the start of Special Olympics GB, which holds a national games every four years.
Matthew said: "It was fun and our team tried their best.
"The volunteers and referees were fantastic with us all.
"I loved meeting up with friends I made last year. It was such a brilliant opportunity to experience being away from my carers and being independent, with help from the team.
"I can’t wait for the next games, where we will be going for gold."
Jake said: "I enjoyed playing football with my friends, old and new, and the support from our families and the volunteers.
"I enjoyed the feeling of being good at something that I enjoy.
"The bronze medal was brilliant, but next time we would like a gold or silver."
The next Special Olympics GB National Games is in 2021.
