Success for village venture
A two-day Fernwood Village Fete was held at the weekend and organisers say it was an overwhelming success.
The fete was organised by a committee of residents with the aim of providing something that would appeal to everybody and bring people living in the village together.
Attractions included a real ale bar, fun-fair rides, lunches, a coconut shy and games.
There was a sell-out music event in the village hall on Saturday, which featured Flipside, a swing band from Newark.
Fernwood Falcons Netball Club played a mixed competition with Fernwood Footballers raising money for Breast Cancer Research, the Meningitis Trust and the football club.
There was also a tug of war, a children’s fancy dress competition, plays by Fernwood Amateur Dramatics and music by Fernwood Band and Newark and Sherwood Concert Band.
Co-ordinator Sue Bennett said it was a real community effort, which had brought people together.
She said: “We wanted to create something for the village. It was a great success.”
The chairman of Fernwood Parish Council, Mr Mike Mutter, said it was the first time they had attempted such a big event and he was pleased to see so many people there.
“There was a lot of effort put into it and we have learnt a lot. I hope it will be repeated in the future,” he said.
