A football match organised by British Sugar in aid of five-year-old brain tumour sufferer Liam Andrew and Beaumond House Community Hospice, Newark, raised more than £3,000.

The game, between British Sugar and its contractors, was held at Newark Flowserve.

After a 1-1 draw, the contractors won a penalty shoot-out 5-4.

There was also live music, a bouncy castle, and fundraising activities, including a blind auction with tickets to this year’s Moto GP in Silverstone and executive box tickets at Northampton Saints Rugby Club among the prizes.

Mr Ryan Hind, mechanical technician at British Sugar, who played in the match, said: "The weather was disappointing but overall it was a good day, enjoyed by everyone who took part.

"It was for two good causes and we have raised a great amount."

It was the third consecutive year that British Sugar had organised a charity match.

It always raises money for Beaumond House and chooses a different second cause each year — this time the #love4littleliam campaign.

They match has so far raised £3,019, which Mr Hind said he thought would increase.

Liam Andrew, of Beacon Heights, Newark, has an incurable and aggressive cancerous tumour, Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG).

A public appeal was launched to raise £500,000 for any treatments Liam may need.
