Swine flu: Preparing for worst

A Newark pharmacist is helping to ensure patients have access to medicines in the event of a swine flu epidemic.

Mr Tandeep Gill, the branch manager of The Co-operative Pharmacy, Sherwood Avenue, has been recruited to work alongside NHS Nottinghamshire County and doctors to develop a business plan to keep pharmacies open if staff develop swine flu.

Mr Gill said preparations had been under way for some time.

He said: “We have prepared as best we can. There are plans in place within the county should an epidemic occur.

“We are all working together on this. Things need to go on as normal. Services will continue.”

Mr Gill urged people with suspected symptoms to call the flu helpline.

“People need to stay at home and reduce the movement of flu,” Mr Gill said.

He said pharmacists could offer medicines, such as paracetamol, to help relieve symptoms, and these should be collected by a person’s nominated “flu friend.”

Pharmacies are also handing out leaflets offering advice on swine flu.

The leaflet details precautions and symptoms, and reiterates the need for good hygiene.
