Newark’s National Civil War Museum holding workshop on history of birthing chair

A free workshop based on the intriguing past of a 17th Century birthing chair will be held at Newark’s National Civil War Museum.

The upholstered chair, an exhibit, has a hole in the seat that was used to aid upper-class women when giving birth.

Dr Sara Read, lecturer at Loughborough University, who will be speaking at the event, said: “It wasn’t shown to it’s best advantage tucked in the corner.

“Hundreds of women have given birth on it — it can really spark people’s imagination, just picture yourself sitting on it.”

The chair encourages women to stay upright.

People can view the chair and develop a short story based on the idea ‘if it could talk, what stories could it tell?’

There are four book prizes to be won for successful storytellers.

The event is on Friday, February 28, at 5pm. There is also hosting a conference between 10.30am and 4pm to give people the opportunity to examine the birthing chair and hear from expert speakers.
