The past in pictures

People in Bingham are being asked to identify pictures from the past.

More than 30 photographs from the library’s collection have gone on display at Bing-ham Library showcasing every-day life in the town.

The library is asking residents to look at the exhibition and help to identify when and where the photographs were taken, and what they show.

It is believed most were taken during the early 20th Century.

Mr Nick Tomlinson, who is running the project, gave a talk to around 30 people at Bingham Library last week.

Mr Tim Warner, from the county council’s library service, said: “The team at Bingham Library have found photographs from their collection that we do not know much about.

“We are hoping that by putting them up, people can fill out the detail of the photo-graphs.

“We have been given a bit of information about some of them.

“But we want to record as much detail as we can from the photographs, such as the family ones, including when and where they were taken, and who is featured in them.

“We are hoping that by putt-ing them up in the library we will inspire people to bring us even more.”

Mr Warner said the earliest photographs probably dated from the turn of the last century, while the later ones date from the 1920s.

He said most were from around the time of the first world war.

The exhibition is part of a wider project, Picture the Past, which is being run by the library services in Notting-hamshire and Derbyshire.

Libraries in both counties have been displaying photographs with the aim of finding out more about them and the history of local communities.

People can add their own pictures of the past to the project’s website, which currently includes more than 100,000 photographs. For details go to www.picturethepast.org.uk.
