Thieves dug a tunnel underneath a 10,000 volt electric fence to steal £8,000-worth of copper earthing from an electricity sub-station.

The thieves struck at the Staythorpe B sub-station, near the Averham slip road on Staythorpe Road, some time between Friday and yesterday.

They stole copper earthing strips from the pylons and a-frames at the National Grid sub-station.

Southwell beat manager Pc Tony Hayes described the theft as stupid and dangerous.

He asked for anybody with information to contact him.

People can call Southwell Police Station on 0300 300 9999, extension 809 7672.
