Nottinghamshire Police Federation and Newark MP Robert Jenricks’ thoughts with police officer seriously injured when hit by a train at Balderton
The organisation that represents rank and file police says it is thoughts are with those affected by last night’s incident in which an officer was hit by a train as they tried to save a life.
Nottinghamshire Police Federation said it was supporting a number of the officers’ colleagues through the ordeal.
Officers were called to a residential area in Balderton at around 7pm on Thursday over concerns for a man’s safety.
During the incident, the officer was hit by a train and left with serious injuries. He was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre.
The man on the railway lines was also injured but it is not thought his injuries are life-threatening. He was also taken to hospital.
British Transport Police is leading the investigation.
Nottinghamshire Police Federation branch chairman Simon Riley said the thoughts of the federation were with the officer who is in a serious condition after being hit by a train as he attempted to save a distressed man. said: “The thoughts of Nottinghamshire Police Federation are very much with our injured colleague and his family.
“We are supporting a number of officers involved in the incident and will continue to do everything we can to support all of our members at this time.
“This incident highlights the bravery and dedication of our members in Nottinghamshire in serving our communities and keeping people safe.”
Newark MP Robert Jenrick said: "My thoughts and prayers are with the Police officer critically injured in the line of duty at Newark station.
"Terrible incidents such as this remind us of the bravery of those serving in Nottinghamshire Police and police forces across the country. Risking your life to try to save someone else is the epitome of public service.
"Thank you to the first responders who arrived on the scene and my thoughts are also with those at LNER, Network rail and BTP who will also have been affected by this incident."
The officer had been responding to a concern for welfare report.
British Transport Police said: “Officers attended alongside paramedics, where one man was found to have sustained non-life-threatening electrocution injuries, and another man, a Nottinghamshire Police officer, had sustained life-changing injuries and sadly remains in a critical condition. Both were taken to hospital where they remain.
Chief Constable Kate Meynell said earlier today: “This is a truly devastating incident that has left one of our officers very poorly in hospital. We are supporting his family and ensuring that he gets all the care and support he needs.
“This was also extremely traumatic for all those who attended the scene, some of whom provided immediate medical assistance while the ambulance was on its way.
“I would like to personally thank them for their quick and dedicated response to this incident.
“Officers and police staff put themselves in danger every day to keep the public safe and from harm and I personally want to say how eternally grateful and proud I am of them all.”
