Three men arrested by police after spate of alcohol-fuelled pub assaults in Newark town centre

A spate of pub violence has resulted in three arrests — with a man glassed during one assault.

Three separate incidents of violent disorder in and around Newark town centre pubs were reported to police within the space of a few hours over the weekend.

They have been branded as “completely unacceptable” by the area’s Inspector, who said people should be able to go out for a drink without fearing assault.

The first assault occurred at a in a beer garden outside a pub near the market place, around 10.55pm on Saturday, December 14.

A man was left with a nasty cut to his face after being attacked by a group of people, who hit the victim in the head with a bottle or drinking glass following a brief altercation.

Another fight was then reported to the police soon after — again in a town centre beer garden — during which a man was punched by several people and hit repeatedly with a chair.

This separate assault took place outside a pub on Kirkgate, just after 11pm.

In the early hours of Sunday, December 15, officers were alerted to a third violent incident, this time inside a pub on Castlegate.

A staff member was slapped in the face when a group of people were asked to leave the premises, at 1.40am.

After speaking to witnesses and analysing CCTV footage, officers identified three people they suspected of being involved.

Two of these suspects were tracked down and detained on Sunday, while another was arrested on Monday, December 16.

The three, all men aged 43, 26 and 19, were all arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.

The 19-year-old was additionally arrested on suspicion of two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, while the other two men were also arrested on suspicion of affray.

Inspector Charlotte Ellam, District Commander for Newark and Sherwood, said: “The violence and aggression showcased in each of these three incidents was completely unacceptable and not what we want to see anywhere near our communities.

“People should be able to go out for a social drink and have some fun, especially at this time of the year, without having to worry about being assaulted.

“We hope the three arrests our teams have made in connection with these assaults shows the public just how seriously we take reports of violent disorder, and that this will not be tolerated.

“While I’m sure each of these assaults will have been assisted to various degrees by the amount of alcohol consumed, that is just not a valid excuse for anyone to behave in this manner.

“One of the victims sustained a nasty gash to his face as a direct result of the violence on show here, which took place in front of numerous witnesses, due to the time and place this happened.

“I’d like to thank each person who spoke to our officers and has assisted our inquiries into these incidents so far and would ask anyone who saw what happened but hasn’t reported it yet to do so by calling 101.”
