Chess Master Cafe opens in the Bull Yard, Southwell,
A three-in-one business has opened its doors, combining food, music and board games.
Chess Master Cafe at Bull Yard, Southwell, is a cafe that includes a music room on the ground floor, a cafe on the first floor and a chill area for board games on the top floor.
Owner Irina Minas, opened her first business Bee Queen Honey Shop at the Bull Yard earlier this year and has now added a second.
On opening her shop in April, she said she wanted to involve the community and engage youngsters in the arts and vibrance of the town.
“It was quite emotional to open another business in Southwell, the environment we created is amazing,” said Irina.
“Using all the new mix and match, the student's hard work and everything handmade we have created a new community hub.
“It’s different from when you go to a chain cafe. The residents were really welcoming but questioned how we are different from other cafes.
“We are trying to offer something different, our food is mainly Armenian, and we are hoping that people experience something different.
“The music room and free board games will hopefully attract more people and we also have a chess board at each table for people to practise their skills.”
A piano was donated to the music room by the son of a former Minster School teacher who recently died.
“That was very important for us to keep her memory,” said the business owner.
Irina is employing students from the area during school holidays for them to earn some money and be involved in the community.
The cafe is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 5pm but once business increases its customer range, it is hoped to open until later. Events will often be hosted at the cafe.
The business’s first event is set to take place on August 12 with a music concert.
An award-winning musician from Derbyshire will be playing from 6pm onwards.
Tickets are £32 which includes entry and food and drinks for the evening.
“I took a risk for sure, during this economic situation as I am using my savings, but I am hoping that residents will support us.
“This is a place for young people to also gather, meet people and spend time together as well as families and everyone from Southwell is invited to come and try the space and maybe become regulars.”
