A Balderton couple have been made Champions of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust in recognition of their work with the charity.

Mrs Elaine Moody, 56, of Grove Street, was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s in 2006. Since then she and her husband, Mick, 57, who worked for the fire brigade for more than 20 years, have done everything they can to raise money and awareness to help beat the disease and other forms of dementia.

With the help of friends and family the couple have raised more than £8,000 for the charity.

Mrs Moody took part in the London Marathon in 2008 and 2009.

Mr Moody said when his wife was diagnosed they were shocked to discover there was so little money available for research into the disease. He said they were honoured to be named champions.

He said: “Elaine’s diagnosis was a huge blow but once we accepted the situation we decided to concentrate on what she can do rather than what she can’t.

“Sometimes Elaine can’t help shedding a few tears of frustration when she forgets what cupboard the mugs are in or can’t manage to do up her buttons. But we try to see the funny side of things and have a laugh together.”

He said they had tremendous support from their friends and family.
